Dan's Travels: Ponce Inlet, FL (November 2007)
Formerly known as the Mosquito Inlet, Ponce Inlet is the home of the Ponce Inlet Lighthouse, the tallest in the state of Florida and the second tallest in the nation. Designated as a National Historic Landmark, the 175-foot Light Station is one of the best preserved in the nation. We came here with Carina on a homeschool fieldtrip with the Apple Group. It was pretty exciting to see some dolphins in the Inlet. We spent some time at the Marine Science Center where Carina and other homeschoolers learned about some specimens of wildlife from the center's volunteers. After lunch, we toured the Light Station Museum and climbed 203 steps upwards to the lighthouse balcony. The panoramic view from the balcony was pretty breathtaking. We could see the remnant of Daytona Beach, the Inlet, and New Smyrna Beach.
