The drive along the Crater Rim and the Chain of Craters Road was a stern reminder of decades of active and dangerous crater and lava activity. Although we expected more stinky odor from the fumes, we were well aware of the danger of fumes. The sign was posted conspicuously throughout the park. Not a whole lot of life thrived on the lave beds and mounds. It did look like we were on a different planet.
