Dan's Travels: Diamond Head, Waikiki (October 2006)

Diamond Head Crater is probably the most recognized volcanic crater in the world. It dominates the view along the Waikiki beach. Originally named Laeahi by the ancient Hawaiians, its current name was given by some British sailors who mistook the glittering crystals from the lava rock for diamonds. A United States State Monument, Diamond Head still belongs to the military but is open to the public for hikes and drives. We like the view of Diamond Head from the Sheraton Waikiki main pool. Carina took advantage of the view in her wave jumps.
